Tree service for Bartow — the City of Oaks and Azaleas
Bartow calls itself the City of Oaks and Azaleas, and its historic district has the live oaks to prove it. It also has a century of laurel oaks and the Peace River at its back door.
Bartow is the Polk County seat, about 19,000 people ten miles south of Lakeland on US-98 — the 'City of Oaks and Azaleas,' with a historic downtown and residential district of 1880s–1920s homes under enormous live oaks, the courthouse square, and the headwaters of the Peace River on its east side. It's also phosphate country: the mines and the Mosaic operations south and east of town shaped the economy for a century, and the land around Bartow is a mix of old groves, pasture, mined and reclaimed land and bottomland hardwood along the Peace. The city's canopy is 29 percent, among the highest in the county.
Bartow's historic district has the same century-old planting as Lakeland's: live oaks that should be preserved and laurel oaks and water oaks that are at the end of their 50-to-70-year lives. The 2004 storms hit Bartow particularly hard — Jeanne put 77 mph winds on the city and the Peace River crested at a record at the Bartow gauge — and Irma, Ian and Milton each took their share of the big oaks. Our Bartow work is the historic district's oaks, preservation pruning on the live oaks and removal of the failing laurel oaks; the Peace River bottomland trees along the east side, which are a different species mix (cypress, red maple, sweetgum, water oak) and fail differently; the pines and palms in the newer subdivisions off US-17 and SR-60; and lot clearing on the old grove and pasture land around town.

Questions from Bartow homeowners
Bartow's big live oaks — do they ever need removing?
Almost never. A live oak with a sound trunk can carry a lot of dead wood and still be safe for a century; the work is pruning, not removal. We remove a live oak only when it's genuinely failed — a split trunk, a heaved root plate — and we'll show you why.
Why do the trees along the Peace River fail differently?
Bottomland species — water oak, red maple, sweetgum — are faster-growing, softer-wooded and shallow-rooted in wet ground, and they go over whole in a storm when the river's up. Cypress, on the other hand, almost never fails. Species decides it.
Does Bartow require a permit to remove a tree?
Bartow has its own tree ordinance, oriented toward protected and specimen trees and development; most routine single-family removals don't need one, but a large live oak may. We check with the city per property before we cut.
